Russia is putting its economy on a war footing, constituting a serious threat to NATO. If anyone dares to attack Poland or another NATO ally, the Alliance’s reaction will be “devastating.”
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a joint briefing in Warsaw with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
As Rutte emphasized, Poland is a very important ally within the North Atlantic Alliance, which spends 4.6% of GDP on defense, which is currently the largest share among all allies.
He emphasized that the world is becoming “increasingly dangerous” so NATO countries must boost their national defense spending.
“Let’s not forget that Russia is remaining, the most significant and direct threat to our Alliance. Let’s not forget that Russia is moving into a wartime economy, and that will have a huge impact on their capacity and capability to build their armed forces,” Rutte stressed.
The NATO Secretary General stressed that Poland is strengthening NATO’s eastern flank by increasing its infantry units on the border with Russia and Belarus, as well as within the framework of its international presence. In particular, Polish units are deployed in Latvia and Romania, and from April 4, Polish F-16s will patrol the airspace over the Baltic Sea.
“If anyone were to miscalculate and think they can get away with an attack on Poland or on any other Ally, they will be met with the full force of this fierce Alliance. Our reaction will be devastating,” Rutte stressed.
He added that this should be “very clear” to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, or anyone else who wants to attack NATO.
Rutte also noted that cables in the Baltic Sea connecting Estonia and Finland were cut on December 25. He praised the decisive reaction the Alliance provided within 10 days to what was happening in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea.
The NATO Secretary General also stressed that he had agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump that Europe and Canada should spend more on defense, noting that the allies have recently increased their defense spending by 20%. He also stressed the need to strengthen the capabilities of allied defense industries.
Rutte stressed that Transatlantic unity is the foundation of NATO and that nothing will change in this regard.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, Deputy Chief of Ukraine’s defense intelligence, Major General Vadym Skibitsky, said the Russians had outlined 15 possible scenarios of military contingencies until 2045, four of which are related to Poland.
