Authorities identified a domestic violence suspect who led officers on a high-speed pursuit before ending up in a standoff, describing the violent acts he allegedly committed across San Bernardino County Monday.
The suspect, 47-year-old Jose Martinez of Rialto, started the chain of events in the city of Chino, according to the Chino Police Department. His girlfriend told police that Martinez tried to force her into his car at around 12:15 a.m. Monday, slamming her head into a light pole and striking her multiple times.
The woman managed to escape from the car and call the police.
Then nearly 12 hours later, detectives with the Chino Police Department learned Martinez’s whereabouts and tried to pull him over in the city of Fontana.
Instead of complying with the detective’s order, the suspect refused to comply and rammed his car into two police vehicles to get away, sparking a high-speed pursuit.
The chase began in Chino after a domestic violence report. Christian Cazares reports for the NBC4 News at 3 p.m. on Monday March 10, 2025.
When the police chase eventually came to an end at Kadota Avenue and Mission Boulevard in the city of Montclair, the suspect continued to resist officers’ orders, refusing to come out of the vehicle.
Crisis negotiators were brought in to attempt a peaceful surrender, but Martinez continued to resist.
“The negotiations continued for over an hour before Martinez abruptly exited the car while pointing a dark-colored object and advancing toward officers in a two-handed shooting stance, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Chino police said in a statement.
Following the shooting, Martinez was taken to a hospital in critical condition, still facing a number of potential charges, including domestic violence, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon.
