Russia is expanding the number of information and psychological operations units within its armed forces.
Specialized information warfare units have been established within the 3rd and 51st Combined Arms Armies of the Russian Armed Forces, Ukrinform reports, citing the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry.
Intelligence reports indicate that in April 2024, the Russian government introduced a separate military specialty category titled “Information Confrontation” to staff these newly created units.
Training for psychological operations specialists is conducted at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and the Mozhaysky Military-Space Academy. The relocation of such specialists between military units without approval from district headquarters is strictly prohibited.
According to the report, the expansion of information warfare units within Russia’s military structure demonstrates the Kremlin’s intent to intensify psychological and propaganda attacks against Ukraine, its security and defense forces, and Ukrainian society as a whole.
