Number of complaints about language law violations increases – ombudsman

The increase in complaints about violations of the language law reflects greater language activism and growing intolerance toward infringements on citizens’ linguistic rights.

This was stated by Taras Kremin, the State Language Protection Commissioner, in an interview with Ukrinform.

“We recently compiled statistics for the first quarter of 2025. During this period, my office received 646 appeals from citizens across various regions of Ukraine. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, this number has slightly increased. It shows a rise in language activity and citizens’ intolerance toward violations of their linguistic rights,” Kremin said.

According to him, most complaints were related to the lack of Ukrainian-language versions of websites, violations in outdoor advertising and signboards, and issues in the service sector, among others.

He pointed out that the highest number of violations was recorded in Kyiv, with 261 complaints, which accounts for almost a third of the total.
