An early morning chase ended in a fatal shooting Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley.
At least one California Highway Patrol officer opened fire when the chase, which began in Northridge, stopped in a Winnetka neighborhood. The driver of the Ford Transit van involved in the pursuit was killed.
The shooting was reported at about 2 a.m. in the 7200 block of Sunny Brae Avenue near Cozycroft Avenue. The CHP told NBCLA the officer opened fire after seeing the man holding a gun, which was later recovered at the scene.
“There was a crash, and I heard officers shouting, ‘Get on the ground, get on the ground,'” said witness Stuart Smith. “And then, must have been about, I think, about 16 shots.”
Video from a neighbor’s security camera captured the sound of multiple shots fired.
Family members identified the driver as a 21-year-old. They said he lived in the area and was driving his father’s work van.
No officers were injured.
Details about what led to the chase were not immediately available.
NBCLA’s Jonathan Lloyd contributed to this report.
