The Russian forces are reinforcing their units in southern Ukraine with personnel and equipment arriving from Crimea and via a newly constructed railway line that connects parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions to Russia through Donetsk.
Vladyslav Voloshyn, Spokesperson for Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces, revealed this in a comment to Ukrinform.
“The enemy is replenishing its troops, transferring equipment and weapons both from Crimea and via the railway branch it completed at the end of 2024 and has already put into operation. Additionally, they use all other types of transport, including road vehicles. There are road routes from Crimea as well as from Russia along the Sea of Azov coast, passing through Mariupol, then Melitopol and Berdiansk. They use combined routes because they know we are trying to take their logistics routes under fire control, targeting their supply lines and logistical hubs,” Voloshyn explained.
When asked about the destruction of the railway line built by Russian forces, Voloshyn stated that it has been repeatedly targeted, but the enemy quickly repairs damaged sections.
“The railway has been hit numerous times, including its bridges and tracks. However, the enemy constantly works on restoring it. They also protect it with air defense systems, electronic warfare units, and engineering fortifications. Despite this, we have struck it multiple times and continue efforts to disrupt this logistics route,” the Spokesperson said.
He emphasized that destroying this supply line is a key objective for Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces, though it remains challenging.
“Cutting off logistics routes is one of the most critical aspects of both defensive and offensive operations for any military force,” Voloshyn noted.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, on February 20, Russia launched full-scale railway operations along the Rostov-on-Don – Mariupol – Volnovakha – Donetsk route.
