The UK is advising Ukraine on how to conduct peace negotiations with the United States to prevent a repeat of past diplomatic conflicts.
That’s according to The Times, Ukrinform reports.
“Jonathan Powell, Sir Keir Starmer’s national security adviser, travelled to Ukraine over the weekend to brief Zelensky before his country’s representatives attend the talks with the U.S. on Tuesday, to avoid a repeat of the disastrous Oval Office row with Donald Trump,” the article reads.
Powell is advising Zelensky to clearly demonstrate that he is responding to American requests and to emphasize to Trump that Russia remains the primary obstacle to peace.
The article notes that the UK will not participate in the negotiations, and its officials will only travel to Saudi Arabia at Ukraine’s request.
Meanwhile, Starmer is also attempting to convince Trump to resume intelligence sharing with Ukraine, after last week’s abrupt shut-off that could hinder Kyiv’s ability to defend its cities from Russian strikes. Over the weekend, Starmer spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte — who is set to visit Washington this week — about the necessity of restoring intelligence sharing with Kyiv. Powell also pushed for this during discussions with Trump’s National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz.
The U.S.-Ukraine negotiations will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Ukrainian delegation will include Andriy Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office, Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Rustem Umerov, Minister of Defense
Representing the U.S. side will be Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Waltz, National Security Advisor, and Steve Witkoff, special Middle East envoy.
According to Reuters, U.S. officials at the talks in Saudi Arabia aim to assess whether Ukraine is willing to make concessions to Russia in order to end the war.
